Will of Sir Thomas Lovell K.G: Part 6 (First Codicil)


Instructions Given

By my master Sir Thomas Lovell, Knight of The Garter, to me John Carleton his servant; charging me that according to the trust he put me in to see and cause these instructions and legates by him willed and bequeathed to be performed and fulfilled of his goods by me and the other of his executors in like manner and wise as his other will signed and sealed with his hand and seal, and other instructions in paper with his hand signed, should be performed and done.

Item: I bequeath to the King’s Grace, to obtain a general pardon of His Grace my colour of garters, a ring with a capous stone of a great virtue and a hundred pounds in gold.

Item: I bequeath to my Lord Cardinal’s Grace, to be good and gracious lord to my executors for the execution and performance of my testament and last will, according to the tenure and effect of the same, a standing cup of gold and in gold 100 marks or £100 if it may be borne.

Item: I bequeath to the marriage of my Lord Roos’ sister £400

Item: I give and bequeath to my Lord Roos two basins and two ewers of silver parcel gilt.

Item: I give and bequeath to my said Lord Roos a salt of gold.

Item: I give and bequeath to my said Lord Roos a complete garnish of silver vessels.

Item: I give and bequeath to my said Lord Roos all the hangings that hang in the chambers in the story before the garden called the King’s Dining Chamber, the Privy Chamber and an inner chamber, which is 19 pairs of verdours 3 celours and testours with their curtains, 3 counterpanes, 3 beds of down with fustians to them, and cushions of velvet and cloth of bandkyn in the same chambers and their pallet feather bed with their stuff. The same chambers whole garnished as they stand.

Item: I give and bequeath to Sir Oliver Manners, knight, all the hangings that hang in the chamber over the chapel, containing 7 pairs of green verdours with my arms in the garter, a celour, testour and curtains of sendall, a bed of down with fustians, a counterpane, 3 cushions, a pallet feather bed with stuff to it; the chamber as it hangs.

Item: I give and bequeath to Richard Manners all the hangings that hang in a chamber where my Lord of Oxford lay, containing five pairs of verdours with my arms in the garter, a celour and testour of satin of bridges, a fine feather bed, a pair of fustians, a counterpane, 3 cushions, a pallet featherbed with stuff to it; the chamber whole as it hangs.

Item: I give and bequeath to my cousin Sir Thomas Lovell, knight, one basin and one ewer of silver parcel gilt.

Item: I give and bequeath to my said cousin Sir Thomas Lovell, knight, all the hangings containing 7 pairs of verdours that hang in the great chamber over the parlour next the chapel, with a celour, testour, and curtains, a bed of down, a pair of fustians, a counterpane, cushions, a pallet feather bed and stuff to it. The same chamber whole garnished as it now stands.

Item: I give and bequeath to my cousin Sir Thomas Lovell, knight, of my sheep as wethers, ewes, hogs and lambs in all to the number of five hundred, if it may be borne after by debts paid and my funerals and legacies performed and discharged,

Item: I give and bequeath to my cousin Francis Lovell two basins and two ewers of silver parcel gilt.

Item: I give and bequeath to my said cousin Francis Lovell all my bedding hanging napery plate and stuff of household that I have at my manor or East Harling in Norfolk.

Item: I give and bequeath to my cousin Francis Lovell all my sheep at East Harling in Norfolk.

Item: To each of my good lovers and friends, such as I have remembered their names in a bill; I will they be remembered, some with a cup, some with a goblet, some with a ring of gold of my goods and bequeaths according as they be in degree after the discretion of my executors as they shall see how it may be borne of my goods after my debts funerals legacies been content paid and discharged.

Item: To Master Lyster the King’s solicitor, a cup with a cover all gilt, and in money five pounds.

Item: To Master Wrothe, a cup with a cover and in money five pounds.

Item: My chapel at Halywell to be fully and whole garnished double with such plate as serves for my chapel at Enfield, and with vestments, copes, books, altar cloths and all that is requisite and necessary for the same according to the foundation of my chantry in the same.

Item: I will that the Prioress and Covent of Saint John Baptist of Halywell shall have all my lands and tenements set lying and being in Golden Lane in London, to their monastery forever, they to pray and say daily for my soul and all Christian souls Deprofundis.

And I will that they shall have the King’s License of the Mortmain which issued out for the mortesing of the same.

And I to have of the said Prioress and Covent a house for my chantry priests which is seen and appointed for the same, giving them therefore twenty pounds.

Item: For such as be my kinsmen to be remembered with some part of my goods.

Item: Sir William Paston’s children to be remembered with some part of my goods.

Item: My household servants to be further remembered and rewarded with some part of my goods, other than the bequeaths I have given unto them which be in a paper signed with my hand.

Item: I will that such of my household servants as be able to serve the King’s Grace in his wars, I will that each of them shall have a whole harness to serve His Grace therewith.

Item: My household as it now is and the servants and children therein, if they will tarry there, to have meat, drink, wages and livery by the space of one whole year next and immediately ensuing after my decease in like manner as they now have.

Item: For such poor people as shall be at my interment, as men and women to whom I have willed to be given to each of them 4 pence, I do esteem them to the number of eight thousand, and I do likewise esteem the children to like number of eight thousand, to whom I have willed to each child 2 pence, which to my estimation will amount to that number which is in money two hundred pounds.
